PROGRESS
Sometimes you don't realize you've made any until you completely disembowel someone who is three times better than you on paper.

| Writing and such... |
[Sep. 22nd, 2008|04:09 pm] |
| [ | frame of mind |
| | contemplative | ] | Okay, I've been pretty well fandom-immune of late. For the last year or two, every word I've written has been in an original piece (even if one of those pieces is a repository for some of the original characters from my old Lunar project) and my reputation as the anti-fan is rather well known.
So why, then, am I seriously itching to add a Phantasy Star Universe novelization to my writing projects? Never mind my PS2 copies of the games that just got here this week, to go alongside my 360 version (and subscription)... |

| | Red Hot Chili Peppers - Fortune Faded | ] | I actually thought this day would never come, that I left the DI to find permanent work elsewhere, even if that is the system they have in place. I was really feeling like a fixture there.
It was only a short-lived misunderstanding that prompted me to start looking for work elsewhere, and when I got such a generous offer from WalMart, I would've been stupid to turn it down. It's far from dream-job material, but everything adds up to something great.
It's graveyard. I like that.
I start Tuesday, and my days off are Friday and Saturday. That's conducive to a better social life. I like that (except that I can't get smashed Saturday nights...), so all my local friends reading this, get ahold of me so we can hang out.
It's right across the street from an apartment complex I wanted to move into anyway. I definitely like that.
So things seem to be on the up and up. This might be cutting my IT education short, or at least slowing it way down, but I was starting to doubt my ability to get certified anyway. I basically got everything I wanted from the evil empire in terms of pay, hours, days off, etc, and I'm not sticking myself in a job that's set to cut me loose by design. Plus it's very low-pressure compared to what I was doing. I'll be working more, but I won't feel like I'm working more because it's not nearly as strenuous and my days are my own again.
Daikenkai is doing really well. If you want some fun week-by-week commentary on the gaming industry, be sure to check it out. |

| [ | now listening to |
| | Megadeth - Black Swan | ] | By some miracle, I've finally done it.
I've made the jump from Internet media to print media.
Though I will continue to write for Gamer 2.0 as I have for the last nearly three years throughout its various incarnations, I am also the newest member of the Pro Gam3r Magazine staff as of last night, when I provided them with an (admitted rush job of an) Evolution World 2007 recap/analysis.
Issue #2, with my debut feature, will hit shelves in approximately two weeks.
Though I love the Internet media and can't deny what it has done for me over the years, I've always held the print media in a higher regard just for its inherent nature. There's a much more limited job market, it takes more money to get a publication even off the ground at all, and missing a deadline automatically sets you back at least a month, not just however long it takes you to get whatever you're working on done.
This represents a put-up-or-shut-up situation for me, of course, and I've felt completely ready for it for years. Though I always believed I'd get into the more general-interest type of work like EGM or GamePro if I ever did land in the print world, I'm in my exact element here at Pro Gam3r, where I'll be covering competitive fighting games in the months and hopefully years to come.
I've finally made it. I can do this. |

| [ | now listening to |
| | X Japan - Drain | ] | Finally landed a PlayStation 3 as of Friday, despite a little adventure from 6-10 PM (and an emergency $100 loan from a friend since there weren't any 20 GB consoles in town). I only have Ridge Racer 7 right now, as well as all the online demos, but I'm still quite satisfied.
Out of the demos, F1 is what really wowed me. This is what a licensed racing game is supposed to be all about, even though it wasn't running in HD yet. I'll definitely have to pick it up on or soon after its release on the 27th.
Of course, the real reason for the hasty purchase is none other than Virtua Fighter 5. Once that game hits on the 20th, I may vanish off the earth for a couple months. I'll be picking that up alongside one or two of those nice $80 Japanese arcade sticks, so good times will undoubtedly be had.
I just wish Namco would hurry up and make it easy to get Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection off of the PlayStation Store. Other than that, PS3 is a very underappreciated system. |

| | Nobuo Uematsu and Ian Gillan - Eternity | ] | So yeah, I've had a hell of a lot going on lately, and have thus been unable to keep up with everyone as much as I would like.
If anything could ever shift my religious standpoint away from agnosticism (yeah right), it has to be the fact that over the last couple weeks, I have not been fired or arrested at work despite very compelling reason to do something that would lead to such circumstances. Between customers and certain co-workers, it's a miracle that I haven't simply snapped.
My writing at Amped IGO isn't going so well, which is uncomfortable considering my current workload. I'll get it together, though. Just takes a renewed commitment to focus, I figure (and not so many different and annoying things stretching me thin!).
I've also started a game development house along with four other friends (and counting), thanks to XNA. The initial project will probably spend at least a year in the basic design phase, but it's something that I can honestly say has never been done before, so I can't wait to see the whole thing start to take shape throughout 2007 and into 2008.
Finally, to blow off steam, I've reached way back and reignited my obsession for 9-Ball. It was my last big addiction before Street Fighter II came along, and I've somehow retained nearly all my ability to sniff out blood in the water when there's a good shot on the 9 to be had.
I know I've been really out-of-touch lately, and I want to do something about it, but I want to catch up to everybody one-on-one rather than just cramming all the details in my LJ. Hope you're all doing well. |

| On Thanksgiving: |
[Nov. 23rd, 2006|02:29 am] |
| [ | frame of mind |
| | tired | ] | I'd say "Happy Thanksgiving" but I'm too damn much of a realist. In the immortal words of John Becker (Ted Danson):
"You're old enough to realize that holidays suck. I mean, you start at Thanksgiving with an idea of how things should be. By Christmas, all your dreams are shot to hell. Then everybody drinks on New Year's Eve to forget how bad the past month actually was, and they start the new year with their heads in the toilet, which is pretty symbolic if you think about it."
So, instead of "Happy Thanksgiving" I'll have to go with the more potentially-useful "Good Luck!"
And keep the Pepto handy. |

| How to donate items to Deseret Industries. |
[Oct. 22nd, 2006|01:07 am] |
| [ | frame of mind |
| | irate | ] | I'm going to pitch this sign idea to the higher-ups. After the day I've had, it would be more than justified.
1) When entering the drive-thru, pull as far up as you possibly can. This is to accommodate more cars in the lanes, and allow the dock workers to help more customers at once. The more room you give other donors to drive, the faster everyone gets out. Makes enough sense, right?
2) When entering the drive-thru, and only one of the two lanes are occupied, pull into the empty lane. This is not rocket science. You stupid dickheads.
3) Wait patiently for a Deseret Industries employee to assist you with your donation rather than throwing your crap any old place. You're not helping when you put any random item on any random cart, and you especially aren't being helpful when you throw items on the pavement. Moreover, littering in Utah carries a fine of no less than $250, and we will report you. We have security cameras, and this is the best use for them. Real TV might also be interested in some of the footage, eventually...
I'm sure I could come up with a lot more if only I wasn't too tired/sore to give a fuck. My life/job would be much easier if only the DI would adopt these simple policies. |
